Porter County Jail Roster

The Porter County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody at the county jail in Indiana. PorterCourt.us helps quickly find publicly available information about current and recent inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official site of the Porter County Sheriff's Jail, the INjail Public Access portal, by phone, or in person at the jail's reception. The roster allows you to find out the custody status, charges, and other booking details. It is maintained by the jail division of the Porter County Sheriff's Office and is updated regularly.

Search Current Inmates in Porter Jail

There are several ways to check if a specific person is in custody at the Porter County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to PorterCourt.us — enter the first or last name to find publicly available court and criminal information.
  2. Use the INjail Public Access portal — the state system allows you to search for inmates in any Indiana county jail by last name, first name, or date of birth.
  3. For court case checks, use Indiana MyCase — here you can find case information by name, case number, or citation number.

For the search, you will need:

  • The person's full legal name (last name is mandatory)
  • Booking number, if known

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

By Phone

Call the jail directly and ask the operator to confirm if a specific person is in custody. Be prepared to provide the full name and date of birth of the person you are looking for.

In-Person Visit

You can visit the Porter County Jail reception at the address:

Porter County Jail
2755 State Road 49Valparaiso, IN 46383Phone: 219-477-3000

The reception is open on weekdays; it is recommended to call before visiting to confirm visitor hours.

Find Porter Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created every time a person is brought to jail and processed. This is not the same as a court case — booking records the fact of admission to the facility.

During processing, the following information is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency
  • Mugshot
  • Basic demographic information of the detainee

Booking records can be obtained in several ways. The INjail Public Access portal shows data of those currently in custody. If you are interested in arrest records or a criminal history check, the Arrest Records page on the Sheriff's site contains instructions on how to submit a request. For a more in-depth criminal history check within Indiana, use the limited criminal history search through Indiana State Police, which covers felonies and Class A misdemeanors.

If the person has been transferred to a state Department of Corrections facility, they can be found through the Indiana Incarcerated Database Search.

Search the Porter Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The jail roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field on the INjail portal or on PorterCourt.us. You can also specify the first name to narrow down the results. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one letter can change the result
  • Try a shortened name or just the last name if a full search yields no results
  • If the last name is common, add the date of birth for more precise filtering

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate identifier. If you have it, enter it directly. This is useful when you have already had contact with the system — for example, received the number from a lawyer or an arrest notification.

What to Do if the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure you are using the legal name, not a nickname or abbreviation.
  2. The person may have already been released — the roster only shows those in custody at the time of the request.
  3. There may be a delay of several hours between arrest and the record appearing in the system.
  4. Call the jail directly if the online search shows nothing, but you are sure the arrest occurred.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Porter

The Porter County Jail roster is not an archive of all arrests ever made. It shows individuals currently in custody. Once a person is released, their record disappears from the public list.

Several important limitations:

  • Delay between arrest and appearance in the system. After being brought to jail, there is a processing time — usually from one to several hours. During this time, the record may be absent.
  • Data disappears after release. If a person is released on bail, has served their sentence, or is transferred to another facility, the record will no longer appear in the online roster.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes a name may be recorded with an error or in a different spelling, complicating the search.
  • Minors are not included. Records of individuals under 18 are not part of the public roster.

To obtain archival arrest or booking records that no longer appear online, contact the Porter County Sheriff's Office directly. For searching court cases related to a specific arrest, use the free access to court records system on the county's website or the MyCase portal.
